silly hc that could never happen but once when jason was 12 and a reporter made it close enough to him at a gala to ask "so, how did you get taken in by bruce wayne?" and because bruce deserves to suffer at least once a week, he shrugs and drops "well, batman found me and said bruce would look after me because they have a deal." the reporter is, rightfully, confused, and upon their kind of disbelieving look, jason adds on innocently "it's okay — batman still visits us on the weekends."

papers get published and gothamites — who had always assumed there was some sort of connection between bruce and batman — simply can not believe the two have dual custody over jason todd. batman gets him on the weekends!

rumours spread; exes? divorced? there is a significant increase in kidnapping attempts on bruce wayne, everyone asking the same thing. what exactly is their relationship, and does batman pay child support? does bruce wayne get robin on the weekends? (did batman babytrap bruce wayne??)

the rumours died out years later, not because of time, but because of gotham's fierce loyalty to the bat. jason todd dies and batman is on a warpath. as bruce wayne retracts from the public completely, batman is prowling the streets with reckless abandon. jason todd meant something to him — to them — it only feels right to let them grieve and move on.

+ years later, a leaked picture of bruce wayne hugging red hood after he saved him from a kidnapping reaches the public and a week later, rumours of batman and red hood working together despite their rocky history. the people can not believe bruce wayne is co-parenting half the vigilantes in gotham!

thinking about zone culture again. the coming-of-age traditions in each crew, the handing down of ray guns and cars and old scrap technology being passed down. family is tied together by blood, but the blood spilled to protect one another, not the stuff running through their veins. every adult in the crew takes care of the young ones, the young ones take care of the younger ones. the child birthed into the crew is as much a part of it as the baby found abandoned in the sand, both wrapped in cloth and protected from the harsh elements of the desert.

the rise and fall of crews, fame and fortune being swapped for tragedy and extinction as the years pass by, the myths and legends of old zone-runners and crash-queens being passed down by the only rebels left who remember them. information is traded between zones through zines and radio and signals painted on the side of neutral village buildings, stories are told around campfires and curled up in cars and vans and campers. the fabulous killjoys just being the latest protagonists of the tale told to every motor-baby in the desert.

secret radio stations to tune into that give away locations of one-time gigs and markets and parties, entire campsites being built and torn down in a day to ensure crews can meet up and leave without being caught. rebels trade fuel and water and alcohol and medicine, motorbabies trade shiny pieces of jewellery and drawings and comic books scavenged from abandoned buildings. friendships formed and loves found and lost in a day, the chance of reunion slim in the ever-changing nature of the desert. kisses on cheeks and half-hearted promises and secret handshakes which will never be forgotten, even as years pass by.

The aliens are fond of being called "cute," as it is the first major slip-up the reader makes in fostering a connection. In turn, "cute" is the compliment they use most for the reader--the meaning must be sooo layered and complex for humans to use as endearment!

The reader has never seen Earth, plants, or animals, outside of textbooks. They are fascinated by the fauna/flora qualities of Sun and Moon, and will one day find beauty in their strange, ethereal appearances.

The aliens are always learning the limits and thresholds of humans. So much doesn't make sense. The brain is centralized to the head? How inefficient. Limbs do not regrow and reform once enough biomass and energy is consumed? But human flaws... are rather cute! They diminish, and reduce, rather than redefine and expand. They must need extra help to survive... ! ! !

Sun and Moon are in the vagrant/erratic stage of their life cycle. (Named after types of lichen) Where they can be nomadic for the sake of following the reader about on their tasks. But their species is designed to root into structures -- planets, asteroids, space stations -- and form new ecosystems to live within, incorporate into. To "root." When they are happy, comfy, and safe, they slip into rooting tendencies... for example, the reader might wake up to being in a cocoon of Alien. Whose to say...
